Vulcain History
Vulcain is a Swiss watchmaker famous for the Vulcain Cricket, the vintage alarm dress watch worn by many American Presidents - nicknamed the 'President's Watch'. Vulcain was founded in 1858 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, first known as Manufacture Ditisheim and producing fine Swiss pocket watches. in 1900, the founder, Maurice Ditisheim, patented the name Vulcain and started selling watches under this new brand. The Vulcain Cricket was released in 1947 and was an instant hit, with President Harry Truman wearing one for the first time in 1953. Vulcain struggled during the Quartz Crisis and the brand stopped selling watches under the Vulcain name, only producing watches for sub-brands like MSR. Ultimately the brand was sold more than once over the decades but continues to produce timepieces today.
