Elgin History

Elgin was an American watch brand originally operating from the late 19th century to the late 1960s, selling wristwatches and pocket watches. Since the brand was sold in the late 1960s it has changed hands several times, ultimately losing its original American roots. Elgin was founded as the National Watch Company in Chicago, Illinois in the mid-1860s by a group of men who aspired to build a factory in the area to manufacture pocket watches. Even poaching watchmakers from Waltham, another American competitor. Elgin produced mostly pocket watches until switching to wristwatches in the early 20th century. Today, Elgin pocket watches are very collectible while vintage Elgin wristwatches are also popular.
